Division of IT: About The Division
ASIA Service Model
Conceptually, the Division of IT delivers services and products using the layered ASIA model. Starting from the perspective of the customer looking in, the Division of IT offers our customers Applications and Support sustained by an underlying Infrastructure and directed by Administrative management. The details of the structure are as follows:
Applications
According to Merriam-Webster, the word "application" means "a capacity for practical use" — not just a computer program. For the purpose of describing the Division of IT's service oriented structure, applications are those information technology products and services our faculty, staff, and student customers require to be successful. Applications range from the mundane to esoteric, such as using an ID card to charge campus goods and services, checking e-mail and voice mail, attending training, making a phone call, entering a PeopleSoft transaction, or running a biomedical computer simulation.
Support
It's one thing to employ the information technology applications we provide, but it's another to get help when you need it 24X7. Help ranges from first-tier support from your departmental information technology professional to the IT Helpdesk to the Web-based IT KnowledgeBase. We bump complex problems and issues to second- and third-tier support as needed.
Infrastructure
Our applications and support capability depend on a stable, reliable, and secure infrastructure designed with disaster recovery and business continuity in mind. Infrastructure includes the telephone and network switches, web, application, and database servers and their complex interconnections through optical fiber, copper wire, and coaxial cable — and the case of wireless, through the air.
Administration
Behind the scenes, there is the management team who use a strategic plan and action plans to achieve the goals of the Division. There is also the project management staff, who bring new or modified information technology products and services to fruition. Finally, there are the dedicated administrative and financial management staff who pay the bills, maintain and monitor budgets, and keep the Division staffed.
