Division of IT: Network Services
Virtual Private Networking Service
Virtual Private Networking (VPN) provides a method for faculty, staff, and students to access university-specific resources through an outside Internet Service Provider (ISP). VPN allows users to take advantage of their existing ISPs and broadband connections to access university-specific resources. VPN also provides encryption from the user's computer to the outside edge of Mizzou TigerNet.
Users with TigerLink 56K Dial-Up, TigerLink Plus Long-Range Ethernet or Mizzou TigerNet connections do not need to use VPN to access MU-specific resources.
Types of Service
Software VPN: Basic Service
Basic VPN service provides remote access to MU resources from a single computer — anywhere on the Internet. This service is available free of charge to all faculty, staff and students. Software is available via the Software Distribution Center. Faculty and staff should contact their IT Pros for additional assistance.
Software VPN: For Groups
Software VPN for groups provides a block of VPN connections for a department's exclusive use. IP addresses are assigned specifically to this group and are not shared with any other VPN users. This service is ideal for system administrators who need to securely manage systems from a remote location. Groups are available in incremental blocks of 2, 4 and 8 IP addresses. Use the network consulting form to request VPN groups.

Additional Support Information
Disconnects/timeouts: For security reasons, the VPN server disconnects a session after a four-hour continuous connection. Simply reconnect to the VPN and establish a new session.
Video/audio streaming: When connected to the VPN, video/audio streaming might not work. Disconnect from the VPN before running video/audio streaming utilities.
ZoneAlarm: There is a file conflict between the Cisco VPN client and ZoneAlarm. Installing ZoneAlarm after the Cisco VPN Client will break the Cisco VPN client.
Network functions/Internet applications (Windows XP): This can be caused if you have Network Bridging enabled on your Network Connections tab. To disable the bridge:
- Click on Start, then Control Panel.
- Double-click on Network Connections.
- Right-click on the Network Bridge, then click Delete.
Network functions/Internet applications (Windows 2000): This can be caused if Routing and Remote Access is turned on under Windows Services.
Local resources with NetBIOS names: This is a known issue. You will have to use the computer or device IP address to make the connection while connected to the VPN.
