Best Practices: Handheld Devices

Handheld devices such as PDAs and cellular phones are used daily by many people. It's important to protect these portable devices from information security threats and keep them physically secure.

The following basic good security practices apply to any portable electronic device.

  1. If the device is equipped with Bluetooth, turn off discoverable mode.
  2. Use secure passwords and change passwords regularly.
  3. Encrypt sensitive data.
  4. Require authentication when device is powered on and lock device when not in use.
  5. Record the serial number and model number of each portable device. The University Police Department will let you use their engraver to etch your name or other identifying marks into your device. It's harder to resell stolen property with someone else's name or a big scratched out area plainly visible. Call (573)884-7809 to schedule an appointment.
