Make IT Safe: Guest Lecture ProgramThe Division of IT offers a variety of guest lecturers available to speak to departmental or student groups. Lecture descriptions are listed below, and new topics are being added on a regular basis. Division of IT may also be able to accommodate custom lecture requests. Contact isam@missouri.edu with questions or to schedule a presentation.Available LecturesSecurity AwarenessThis lecture is a low-tech overview of information security issues. Topics covered include password safety and security, social engineering, physical security, and Internet and e-mail security. This course is best suited for non-technical individuals who are interested in learning how to protect their computer and data. We also offer a Blackboard course covering the same material followed by quizes to test your knowledge. If you are intersted in the Blackboard course please contact isam@missouri.edu.Phishing/SpywareThis lecture is a low-tech discussion of current trends in phishing and spyware. Examples of common phishing scams are discussed, as well as ways to identify a phish and ways to report incidents. Spyware is defined and Spybot Search & Destroy is demonstrated as a way to keep a user's system clean.Identity Theft: Deter, Detect, DefendThis lecture is presented using material from the Federal Trade Commission's identity theft awareness campaign. Users learn ways to minimize the chances of becoming a victim of identity theft and how to minimize damage should a theft occur.Digital Millennium Copyright ActThis lecture presents the basics of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and discusses how it affects users on the MU campus. Examples of violations of the DMCA are discussed, as well as information on how MU responds to DMCA complaints filed against faculty, staff. An optional short video is also available that presents an informative discussion about intellectual property and file sharing and how it affects college campuses nationwide. We also offer a Blackboard course covering the same material followed by quizes to test your knowledge. The presentation reviews real examples of application level break-ins and the methods attackers used to execute the break-ins, with a focus on writing secure code to prevent attacks.Information Security Auditing & ToolsThis lecture is designed to give students an appreciation of the information security auditing process and the types of tools necessary to successfully audit information systems. The presentation reviews examples from the MU campus auditing program, details the internal information system auditing processes, gives examples of tools used in the process, and aids students in identifying key features to consider when evaluating assessment tools.Payment Card Industry Data Security StandardThe Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Standard lecture will give students an understanding of the organizational challenges associated with e-commerce security. The presentation reviews the twelve areas of the PCI Data Security Standard from a high level and gives real world examples from the MU campus related to the implementation and maintenance of e-commerce on the campus.
