Virus and Spyware Removal

Symantec Endpoint Protection: Even if your computer is brand new, it can still be infected with viruses or spyware. Symantec Endpoint Protection software is free to students (including a subscription for future updates). Please install this version, even if you are already running antivirus software. It's available from the Software Distribution Site. Update your virus definitions regularly by using the free subscription service.

If you have a spyware problem on your machine, there are a number of free utilities available on the Internet to help you manage it; Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, and Trend Micro are a few of the most common. If these don't help, you might need to have your operating system reinstalled to make sure all spyware and viruses are completely removed. TigerTech in the Student Center/Brady Commons offers a service to reinstall operating systems. Visit www.mutigertech.com for more information.

Maintaining Computer Software

The following is a short list of good software maintenance "rules of thumb" to keep your computer in good working condition:
  • Install the latest versions.
  • Avoid downloading free programs (they often contain spyware).
  • Use a personal firewall.
  • Regularly update your antivirus software.
  • Keep your operating system patched and up to date.
